Saturnalia (Carnival)

Basic facts

  • 5 feet (1.5m) length

  • Late Triassic

  • South America

  • Omnivore

Saturnalia is a genus of extinct dinosaur belonging to the basal sauropodomorph group. It lived during the Late Triassic period. Only three skeletons have been found to this date, from Brazil, South America, the Santa Maria Formation.

As one of the earliest true dinosaurs discovered, Saturnalia likely reached a length of approximately 1.5 meters (5 ft) and weighed around 4 kilograms (8.8 lb). Saturnalia had relatively short arms, legs, and tail. Despite its slender build, it possessed a skull resembling prosauropods, while its leg structure was more akin to that of theropods.

Due to its blend of sauropodomorph and theropod features, along with its primitive nature, classifying Saturnalia has proven challenging. The features of its skull and hand bore greater resemblance to theropods, leading to the conclusion that Saturnalia could be classified as a member of the sauropodomorph "stem-lineage," rather than a definitive member of that group.
