Judiceratops (Judith River Horned Face)

Basic facts

  • Late Cretaceous

  • USA

  • Herbivore

Judiceratops is a horned dinosaur that existed during the Late Cretaceous Period, approximately 78 million years ago, in what is now Montana, United States. Its name, derived from "Judith River horned face," reflects its origin. Similar to other horned dinosaurs, Judiceratops was a sizable herbivore that walked on all fours. Remarkably, it holds the distinction of being the earliest identified chasmosaurine.

Judiceratops holds the distinction of being the earliest identified member of the Chasmosaurinae subgroup, yet it already exhibits many of the characteristic traits associated with this group. The coexistence of specialized centrosaurines like Albertaceratops during the same period suggests a swift evolution of horned dinosaurs between the Turonian epoch, marked by the appearance of the earliest North American horned dinosaur, Zuniceratops, and the middle Campanian epoch. This period, spanning around 15 million years, represents a relatively brief interval in the context of dinosaur evolution.
