Blikanasaurus (Lizard from Blikana)

Basic facts

  • 16.4 feet (5m) length

  • Late Triassic

  • South Africa

  • Herbivore

Blikanasaurus, scientifically known as "Blikanasaurus cromptoni," is classified as a member of the Sauropodomorpha group, which includes some of the largest dinosaurs to ever roam the Earth. The name "Blikanasaurus" is derived from the Blikana River in South Africa, where its fossils were first discovered. It lived during the Late Triassic period, approximately 228 to 201 million years ago.

The discovery of Blikanasaurus fossils was made in the Elliot Formation of South Africa in the mid-1960s. While incomplete, these findings have provided valuable insights into the early evolution of sauropod dinosaurs.

Blikanasaurus was a medium sized dinosaur, relatively small for a sauropod with estimates suggesting it could have reached lengths of up to 16.4 feet (5 meters) or more. As a sauropod, it had a distinct body plan characterized by a long neck, robust body, and powerful pillar-like legs. Its small head, relatively long tail, and massive size are typical features of sauropods.

Though many details of its anatomy remain uncertain due to the incomplete nature of the fossils, it is believed that Blikanasaurus would have resembled other early sauropods in overall body structure.
